How Much Does a Septic System Cost in Nanaimo?
Nanaimo Septic Systems installs new septic systems for $8,000 to $40,000, before design and filing. If your soil is good, a straightforward Type 1 sits at the low end. If your lot is tight or shallow, a Type 2 sits at the top. We custom-quote a Type 3. We quote design, your site assessment and the filing with Island Health separately, generally $2,000 to $5,200. We pump most residential tanks for $300 to $600.

An onsite sewerage system is a treatment and disposal system that handles all of a property's wastewater on that property, with no connection to a municipal collection system.
What actually sets the price is how your soil decides the system type.

The five things that move the price
First, the effluent standard the ground forces — a Type 1 system is treatment by septic tank alone, while Type 2 and Type 3 add treatment before disposal and cost more to build and to run. Second, the disposal field type, from a simple gravity field to pressure distribution to a raised sand-based field. Third, the field area, which shrinks as treatment improves. Fourth, excavation depth and what comes out of the hole. Fifth, access — whether a truck reaches the work or the material is moved twice.
What the Regional District will pay back
The Regional District's SepticSmart program refunds 75% of eligible expenses on repair or replacement work on an existing system — new installation and tank pump-outs do not qualify. Access risers are capped at $400, a distribution box at $200, an effluent filter at $100, and repair or replacement work valued above $10,000 at $700, but the $700 rebate cannot be combined with the riser, distribution box or effluent filter rebates on the same job. The work has to be done in the year before you apply, and a property that has already had a similar rebate cannot get another one. Applications are open for 2026.

What the authorities themselves charge
You can pull a property's existing sewerage records from Island Health for $50, using a Request for Release of Information form — often the cheapest useful step you can take before making an offer.

What pumping saves you
The Regional District advises that most tanks need pumping every 3 to 5 years. Pump your tank on that interval and you protect the disposal field. Risers, effluent filters and distribution boxes are all rebated, all cheap relative to a replacement field, and all easier to fit while access is already open.
